About Us

We are a large and enthusiastic family that is always looking for new challenges and setting high goals. When we first saw this breathtaking mill, we were enchanted by its magical charm and the incredible atmosphere it offers. Upon entering inside, we immediately felt its rich history and nostalgia, which could be felt in every corner.

The mill is like a story of the past intertwining with the present. The unique and timeless renovations carried out by the previous owners are meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail. Every single piece here tells its own story, and we are completely absorbed by this atmosphere. We fell in love with the mill immediately and knew that this was the place where our family belonged.

In various parts of the building, we are discovering fascinating objects, old photographs, and preserved documents left behind by Mr. Miroslav Navrátil, a talented designer and architect who lived and created in this house. As you explore these records and stories, you will discover how closely this mill was connected to the original Moučka milling family. The house is like a living book whose pages are filled with history and personal stories.

Our task is to preserve the authenticity and natural feel of this place. We pay great care to the renovation and full furnishing of the mill. Every object, every photo, and every detail has its place to serve its purpose and be preserved for future generations and for those interested in a tour.

Our plans

Our intention regarding the reconstruction and use of this mill evolved over time. Originally, we considered locating the headquarters of our company, Sunsystem, here and creating offices and an exhibition showroom. Later, we focused on establishing a guesthouse; however, over time, we decided to expand our plans and add a restaurant along with other facilities. During the reconstruction, we collaborated with architects from the Synergies Architects studio led by Marek Nemeth, builders, and experts from various professions.

The reconstruction itself lasted approximately 3 years and came during a difficult period from an economic and social perspective. We had to face challenges such as the COVID pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine, the energy crisis, and more. However, with maximum effort, we coped with all these challenges, and now we are looking forward to the opening of the complex, which awaits us in the autumn of 2023.

Why did we decide to name this space Galerie mlýn Žeraviny? The main attraction is, of course, the watermill itself. It is fascinating that in such a small village there were two watermills, both powered by a single millrace from the Velička River. And why "Galerie" (Gallery)? Because Mr. Miroslav Navrátil, a prominent architect and designer who lived and created in this house, deserves a small presentation and gallery of his work. It is our tribute to his significant contribution and legacy.

Attention also belongs to Mr. Miroslav Navrátil

Miroslav Navrátil, one of the most prominent designers of seating furniture from the 1950s to the 1970s, was born in Boršice in the Uherské Hradiště region into the family of cabinetmaker Josef Navrátil. After graduating from the State Vocational School for Woodworking in Valašské Meziříčí, where other prominent architects such as Václav Hilský, Richard Podzemný, and Zdeněk Plesník excelled during the interwar period, Miroslav planned to continue his studies at the Czech State Industrial School in Brno and later at UMPRUM in Prague. However, his studies were interrupted by the war.

After 1945, he worked in his father's workshop, and after its nationalization, he was also involved in the TON company. He gained valuable experience in a factory producing boats, sleds, and skis in Uherské Hradiště as well. Ultimately, he professionally linked his career with the Development of the Furniture Industry institute (VNP, later the Furniture Research and Development Institute VVÚN), where he worked from 1954 as a designer and developer.

Moučka's watermill from 1447

In the heart of southeastern Moravia, in the village of Žeraviny, lies one of the oldest watermills in the region. Its history dates back to 1447, and to this day, it carries traces of its original purpose and a genius loci that permeates every stone.

For centuries, the mill served its purpose and was a natural part of village life. Today, after a careful and sensitive reconstruction, it has become an exceptional place that combines respect for history with a modern perspective on beauty and authenticity. Every detail has been restored with the utmost care to preserve the atmosphere of the era when water turned the mill wheel and wooden structures resonated with the work of human hands.
